SMART stands for ‘Self Management And Recovery Training’. SMART Recovery is a science-based programme to help people manage their recovery from any type of addictive behaviour. This includes addictive behaviour with substances such as alcohol, nicotine or drugs, or compulsive behaviours such as gambling, sex, eating, shopping, self-harming and so on.

Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual uses a technique, such as focusing their mind on a particular object, thought or activity, to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state.

A group aimed at those who have previous or current experience of the criminal justice system or at risk of becoming involved. The group is a 16 week rolling programme that explores substance misuse and offending behaviours along with practical sessions around issues such as housing and benefits and social activities.

The Basement provides weekly drop-ins for food to those who are socially excluded or homeless. Many are single, without dependent children, so they come bottom of the housing list. With low confidence and self-esteem, low skills, lack of employment, dependent on drugs and alcohol, poor mental and physical health and insufficient access to appropriate housing, they find it almost impossible to move on with their life. *Thursday is also an opportunity to talk to someone about housing issues.

*Breakfast on Thursday is a Healthy Breakfast option. The Basement provides twice-weekly drop-ins in Halifax for food to those who are socially excluded or homeless. We relate our similar experiences and feelings to each other and thus realise that we are not alone and need not be ashamed. Together, we then help each other plan how to deal with our issues. Groups are facilitated by a Recovery Coach and/or people in long-term recovery.

The “Pre-Recovery group” is part of the TBRP Recovery Programme: Pre-Recovery Phase During this phase, you will be supported to reduce your alcohol/drug and to help prepare for medical detoxification if this is necessary. Eight group sessions cover; an introduction to the nature of addiction, why we do what we do and why we can’t seem to stop, dealing with the triggers and cravings that keep us on that downward spiral and an understanding of how you have arrived here…
